Anticipation of a Busy Weekend

Posted by Igor Popstefanija on June 30, 2009

I just thought I’d update you guys on my plans for Independence Day. This week is going to be a short week for me, but not by my own design. On Thursday there will be an HOD (Head of Department) meeting for the EFKS schools in Apia. Then on Friday my school will be participating in the Inter-church Athletics Competition. Our school is organizing the event which will take place in Apia Park. Yours truly will be manning the gate and charging 2 tala to anyone not wearing a school uniform.

So after two days of no school, I will be attending the Independence Day celebrations being put on by our Charge d’Affairs (like an ambassador) at the Robert Louis Stevenson Homestead. The main event will be a Softball Game between Peace Corps and Navy. I’ve also heard talk of a BBQ. Robin, the Charge, really knows how to make us feel at home. Her Thanksgiving Day meal last year was one to remember. Pictures will be forthcoming from these events, but no pictures for now, sorry.

Those of you skypers out there, the fourth of july festivities won’t be starting until 3:30 Samoan time, so I’ll probably be online Saturday morning (about 5 or 6 your time).

Inter-House Athletics

Posted by Igor Popstefanija on June 25, 2009

Last Friday, the school put on a track and field competition. The winners of this tournament will go on to face competitors from the EFKS school system, and then theres also a “Champ of Champs” which is a Samoan wide competition. All of the teachers were given duties at the event. My duty, as a judge, was to determine who finished 3rd in all of the Races. The students were divided into four “houses.” I had been tasked to train the Red House. We ended up finishing second overall, so Malo Red! Afterwards all the students were treated to lunch. The teachers however snuck off and had a special BBQ.

Hard Labor

Posted by Igor Popstefanija on June 16, 2009

So now when I have to discipline the kids I sentence them to hard labor. There is a tree in my front yard and it just constantly rains leaves. So in order to kill two birds with one stone (since the principal has scoled me and told me I have to keep my yard clean) I have them clean the leaves whenever I give a detention. So here are some pictures of my kids after about half of my class was too lazy to walk from their classroom to the computer lab and ended up skipping my class. They didn’t want to pose for the camera, maybe because of the shame.

Photo Tour – Utuali’i

Posted by Igor Popstefanija on June 13, 2009

So Utuali’i is the closet village to where I live, and tends to be where I go to buy my bread and coke. All the children in the village used to yell “bye bye palagi” when I would walk through, but then I confronted one of them and told them that my name was “Toa” and not “Palagi” so now they alternate between “Toa” and “Palagi.” Most of the people in the village know me by sight, but I’ve only had real conversations with the shopkeepers. There are three shops (faleoloa in samoan) in the village. The one pictured is the one I go to the most, because the woman who runs the shop is originally from hawaii. Anyway, hope you enjoy the pictures:

Pictures from my parent’s trip, part 4

Posted by Igor Popstefanija on June 4, 2009

So here we are, the last edition of Pictures from my parent’s trip. This week has been a relaxed week. Next week school will start again, although as usual we will have a full week of cleaning, and then it’ll probably take some time to figure out the proper schedules. Term 2 looks more loaded than Term 1 was. I will have CATs for both the Year 12 and 13 students, plus a Major Project for Year 12, in the span of 3 months. I’m really not looking forward to the term, which ends in September.

In other news, this blog seems to be hitting the big time. I just noticed that is was featured on a wordpress list of “growing blogs.”

Anyway, here are the pictures, hope everything’s going well:

Pictures from my parent’s trip, part 3

Posted by Igor Popstefanija on June 3, 2009

June 1st was Samoan Independence day, which meant that Samoa was effectively shutdown yeasterday and on monday. Monday there were some kind of festivities, involving a parade and a boat race, which I didn’t attend, mostly because it required getting up too early and hoping to catch a bus. No fireworks, which I’m kinda bummed about. Only about month til the US Independence Day, which should be a good time.

Well, so here are the pictures from when my parents and I met my host family:
